A man who has dedicated most of his adult life to sport in Battersea has been honoured by the Queen for his achievements.

Eric Ferebee, from Merton, will receive a Medal of the Order of the British Empire (BEM) after hearing about the announcement over the weekend.

The 69-year-old, who describes himself as Battersea born and bred, began working as a secretary for the Battersea Labour Cricket Club, based in Falcon Road, in 1966.

Mr Ferebee continued working for the club after they became known as Battersea Ironsides in the 1970s, before moving to a new ground in Burntwood Lane in 1981 where they remain to this day.

He said: "I am incredibly proud to have been honoured. I have subsequently found that some people from the club nominated me which is a very nice gesture.

"I always played sport, from the age of 14, and have been involved ever since. I am told that with a BEM you don't get to meet the Queen but you do get to go to a garden party at the palace which is something to look forward to."
