A pensioner known as Mr Cobham has been made an MBE for his services to policing and the community.

Surrey Police volunteer Ken Purssey, who is also known affectionately in the community as KP, was recognised in the Queen’s birthday honours list announced on Saturday, June 16.

The 84-year-old has organised, co-ordinated and recruited volunteers for Surrey Police in the Cobham area on a voluntary basis for the past 10 years.

He began volunteering more than 30 years ago and started as a youth worker in 1978 while still holding down a full-time job.

Since retiring to Cobham 19 years ago he has been the driving force in many local voluntary organisations including Cobham Chamber of Commerce and Downside Residents’ Association and also organised the Cobham Extravaganza for 13 years.

Mr Purssey said: “I feel very privileged to have received this honour but feel that I am receiving the MBE on behalf of the community as a whole.

“Without the other people who also give their time to the town of Cobham I would not have been given this award.”

Chief Constable Lynne Owens said: “I am delighted that Ken’s contribution to the community of Cobham and particularly the work he has done for Surrey Police has been recognised in the honours list.

“He provides never-ending support to the local safer neighbourhood team, promoting their work and presence, and is a credit to the town of Cobham.”
