Epsom and Ewell will mark its 75th anniversary with a celebration parade on Saturday.

The parade which will include many local groups will begin at midday on June 23 at Upper High Street and will be led by the Royal Artillery Band.

They will be followed by the 135 Independent Geographic Royal Engineers (V) squadron from Ewell, the Army Cadet Force, the Air Cadets, local scout groups, the Territorial Army, police and vehicles from the Royal Automobile Club, based in Woodcote Park.

The parade will pass through Ashley Avenue, High Street, Waterloo Road, Chase Road and end in Rosebery Park.

The park will host a variety of exhibitions and entertainment including a performance of Beating Retreat by the Royal Artillery Band and the presentation of diamond jubilee medals to members of the uniformed forces by the mayor of Epsom and Ewell, Councillor Christine Long.

Bourne Hall Museum will be setting up a World War I field kitchen in the park and a 'WWI officer' will be on hand to explain an exhibition of life in Epsom during the World War.

There will also be a static vehicle display, an inflatable assault course and food stalls.

With armed forces day on June 30, a specially commissioned flag will be raised on a flagpole donated by the Royal Automobile Club on the day.

Councillor Long, said: "It is a special event and a privilege to be part of it.

"I hope residents will enjoy watching the parade march through the town and take part in the various exhibitions and entertainment on offer at Rosebery Park".

Special celebratory bunting has been created by 15 primary and secondary schools in the borough for the occasion, which will be on display in the town centre and Ewell Village.

Councillor Long added: "In 1937 at the first celebration marking the borough of Epsom and Ewell, school children of the borough played a big part by each contributing a penny to pay for the Mayor's robe.

"75 years later, the borough's school children are once again a part of the special celebration by taking part in this creative project."

Temporary road closures will be in place for the duration of the parade as it moves along the route.

The event will run from 11.40am to 4pm.
