Those inspired by next week’s Wimbledon championships can have a go themselves at an annual event featuring top tennis coaches and professional players.

Merton Council’s Tennis Fun Day will be held in Wimbledon Park on Friday June 29 and Saturday June 30, for young people aged between three and 18.

Friday will only be for Merton school children, but Saturday is open to all children and will feature professional tennis players who will "drop in during the day", the council said.

Every year Merton hosts the event to get children involved in tennis partnering with the Lawn Tennis Association and the All England Lawn Tennis Club.

The council's cabinet member for community and culture, Councillor Nick Draper, said: “What a summer it’s going to be for sport in Merton - the Championships and the Olympics!

"Thanks, as ever, to the AELTC and LTA for helping to get our children interested in tennis. And I can’t wait to see the Borough dressed in its Olympic colours!”
