Olympic champion Jonathan Edwards paid a visit to a school on Monday to celebrate World Sport Day.

Pupils in Burntwood School, in Burntwood Lane, were also greeted by soul singer Lemar and Ironman world champion Chrissie Wellington.

The event began with a performance by the school's brass ensemble and steel pans group, followed by a flag procession.

A dance was performed by Olympics mascots Wenlock and Mandeville with year seven students.

Mr Edwards spoke to students about the importance of London 2012 and encouraged the youngsters to participate in sport.

He joined Lemar and students in a game of volleyball, which was organised by Burntwood's junior sports leaders.

The youngsters spent the rest of the day enjoying sports they have never attempted before, including scuba diving, kick boxing and boccia.

Principal Helen Dorfman said: "We have 1,700 students at Burntwood and we celebrate culture and diversity through sport, the arts and academia.

"The girls are very enthused by the Games coming to London, and it has been a great way of engaging them and developing our ideals."

The London 2012 World Sport Day marked the start of a five day annual celebration of PE, sport and the Olympic and Paralympic Games.
