A riot of colour and music swept the streets of New Malden as community groups took part in a grand parade.

The procession, which boasted floats, bands and costumes to the theme of sport, wound its way up the High Street to launch the Malden fortnight on Saturday, June 30.

The New Malden district rainbows, brownies and guides won the top prize for the best float.

Their division commissioner Charlotte Fitzgerald said: "It's all down to the girls. It is their enthusiasm, determination and team work that inspires us."

The first day of the annual festival also included a charity cream tea at the scout hall in Tadworth Avenue and the start of photography and art exhibitions in New Malden Methodist Church.

Still to come are a craft fair, a day of performances in St Georges Square and displays of fruit, flowers and vegetables for the Malden and Coombe Horticultural Society summer show, on Saturday, July 7.

Residents can also look forward to flower festival displays, a quiz night and performance by the Juniper Hill Blues in aid of the Neil Desai Foundation, all on Friday, July 6.

A sports club open day and dog show in Blagdon Park will wrap up the fortnight of fun on July 15, with classes for pets and their owners including waggiest tail and best dog’s fancy dress.
