A new library opened its doors in the heart of Clapham this week as part of a £6.5m development inspired by New York’s Guggenheim Museum.

The building, on Clapham High Street, features a medical centre, cafe, Internet zone and community rooms.

It is funded by Lambeth Council which is bucking the trend for local authorities to close or downgrade libraries.

It will be open seven days a week and will be home to over 20,000 books and 34 computers. The building also provides free wi-fi access.

Despite the hefty price tag, the tax payer has not spent a dime as the building has been paid for entirely by the sale of 136 residential flats that form part of the new 12-storey development.

The building is distinctive with a spiral design built according to environmental criteria by Studio Egret West. Carbon emissions and normal water usage will be 30 per cent below average.

Councillor Steve Reed, leader of Lambeth Council, said "While other council’s are closing libraries, Lambeth has been able to open a brand new one in the heart of Clapham that will act as the centre of the community and vital learning space for local residents for many years to come."
