Two brothers beat a man with a metal pole in a pub toilet after they claimed he had disrespected the Queen.

Darren and Lee Flood followed Simon Woodward into the toilet of The Grapes pub in Sutton High Street after a row had broken out in the bar.

Lee, 29, headbutted Mr Woodward while Darren, 26, struck him with the metal bar. They punched him in the face several times in a sustained attack at about 10pm on March 26.

Mr Woodward said the impact of the metal bar on him was like "some kind of explosion".

He was left with lacerations to his face, eyebrows, and head and serious bruising, and was treated at St Helier Hospital.

The two brothers were traced after police analysed CCTV and forensic evidence at the scene.

Both men pleaded guilty at Croydon Crown Court on Tuesday, July 24, to malicious wounding causing grievous bodily harm.

Judge Timothy Stow ordered preparation of pre-sentence reports for Darren ahead of his sentencing on August 29.

Lee was jailed on Tuesday for a total of 22 months for GBH and the breach of a suspended prison sentence.

Judge Stow told him: "It is my view you and your brother were both engaged in a nasty, sustained attack that could not possibly be justified by anything that happened in the argument.

He said Lee was "no stranger to violence" describing the incident as "a completely unprovoked attack with an element of pre-meditation".

Lee, who had previous convictions for offences including common assault and criminal damage, was also found guilty of possession of an offensive weapon after passing the metal bar to his brother.
