A delivery man was injured when a sign fell off a building in Streatham High Road yesterday.

The UPS employee was taken to St George’s Hospital by ambulance after the sign over the entrance to The Picture House flats crashed down at about 3.45pm.

The man in his 40s suffered a gash to his head, according to witnesses, and blood was left splattered on the pavement.

Martina Buxmann and other passersby helped him sit down, gave him tissues and rang for an ambulance.

She said: "I just walked past and I heard a massive crash. I turned round and this guy was standing here with a very big gash.
"You can see all the blood around. It was really bad."

Streatham resident Kenroy Pink said he saw the man in a daze with blood running down his face.
Mr Pink said: "If it had fallen exactly on him he could have died. It was really, really terrible.
"I don’t know who was responsible, but they should have checked it properly and ensured it was safe."

Steve Wylie, from Urban Owners, the managing agent for the residential part of the building, said the condition of the sign had not yet been established.

He said: “We need to investigate what exactly caused this. We are here because it’s a serious incident. We need to follow up and make safe the local environment."

UPS employees and Mohammed Suleman, principal environmental health officer at Lambeth Council, went to the scene but declined to comment.
