A McDonald’s diner got more than he bargained for when he ordered a cooling Coke last week.

Luke Rouse visited the store, on Epsom High Street, last Thursday, on the eve of the Olympics, at which the fast food chain is the official restaurant.

When he got towards the bottom of  his drink he was disgusted to discover part of a plastic drinks tap lurking at the bottom.

The 23-year-old said: "I thought at first that it was a piece of ice in my drink which hadn’t melted, but when I finished the drink I saw it was a dirty bit of the tap.

"I went back and showed it to the staff, but they said all they could do was apologise.

"It’s disgusting.  I don’t know where that tap’s been and I could get ill from this."

A spokeswoman for McDonald’s said that Mr Rouse would be contacted by its customer services team and would receive a full written apology.

She said: "We are sorry for this isolated lapse in our usual high standards.

"Hygiene and safety is a priority at McDonald’s."

As a major sponsor of the Olympic Games, McDonald’s has an exclusive right to sell chips in and around the Olympic venues - meaning customers can only enjoy chips as part of a dish from the fast food giant.
