The Olympic opening ceremony not only brought the whole country together but two people from neighbouring sides of the borough.

It was dubbed the people's opening ceremony, and it certainly was for Sam Pye and Julee Sanderson, whom had both had successfully applied to be drummers for the industrial revolution section of Danny Boyle's opening ceremoony extravaganza on Friday.

Mr Pye, 29, from Carshalton, and Miss Sanderson, 35, from Wallington had never met before rehearsals, but after the two got chatting they realised they both worked in Kingston.

Miss Sanderson said: "It was brilliant. We both hit it off straight away. It was really nice to have a buddy for the long train journey and the late nights after rehearsals. Sometimes we were not getting home until 3am, so it was nice to have someone to talk to. I think we will be friends for good now, it's really weird how it worked out."

The ceremony, which was watched by 23m people in the UK alone and 1 billion worldwide, was seen as a resounding success and the two were delighted to be a part of it.

Mr Pye said: "The whole thing was an incredible experience which I will have with me forever. I had an amazing view from where I was, the people and the noise from the crowd was unbelievable."

"I have drummed in bands before, but nothing compared to this, I expect I will be playing to 100 people again, rather than 80,000, but it will still be fun."

Miss Sanderson said: "Words cannot describe the experience, I'm still jumping now. I think at one point, I was dancing right in front of the Queen, and I thought, oh my word, I'm dancing in front of the Queen, this is weird."
