Two new people's organisation were formed this week in a bid to tackle the underlying causes of the riots.

The Greater Winstanley People's Organisation (GWPO) and Surrey Lane People's Organisation (SLPO) aim to act as umbrella groups for all the community groups in both areas.

It follows a Wandsworth Citizen's meeting in June, when those attending the meeting asked the council leader for "a place at the table" during council meetings.

Both organisations will help to bring people together and collectively challenge the council over issues affecting their neighbourhoods.

Church leaders, police, councillors and Winstanley Estate residents spoke during a heated meeting held in St Peters Church, Plough Road, Battersea on Monday.

Seven new residents associations were formed for estates including Sporle Court, Gagarin House and Pennethorne House during the meeting.

Reverend Patrick Malone, pastor of St Peters Church, Battersea, said: "There is a lot of passion in the room, there is a lot of sense of injustice.

"Proposals where we should have a seat at the table when decisions are made about our homes and our community.

"Govindia said there is no table. It is only right we should have a seat around that table there.

"That is why 30 leaders met after the assembly and decided to form the Greater Winstanley People's Organisation as an umbrella for all of the community organisations in the area."

Issues such as a lack of trust in police, a shortage of youth facilities and drug dealers in estates were debated.

Housing repairs were also on the agenda, with residents saying they are fed-up with having to live with broken window frames, mould and damp.

Frustrated people questioned police whether any changes will come about, with Inspector James Ellis promising big changes once the Olympics are over including more officers for Lavender Hill.

James Asfa, a member of Wandsworth Citizens, spoke of Big Lottery funding being pumped into Battersea and encouraged people to help decide how it is spent.

"When people are angry and the council are not doing anything and the police are not doing something we can help.

"I think it is a great idea to involve the people who live there, the only way to get that is by being organised and getting together."

The people's organisations were formed in the wake of the riots following research into what was putting pressure on people in Wandsworth.

Wandsworth Citizens has already helped turn Clapham Junction into a CitySafe Zone, with a number of businesses signed up to provide safe havens when youngsters feel threatened.
