Croydon launch new drink drive campaign

A new ‘Don’t drink and drive’ campaign is being introduced throughout August and September. Croydon Council is enforcing the campaign.
The ‘Drinking? Don’t drive!’ message is being broadcast around the borough on roadside signs, beer mats, on the sides of taxis and on pavements outside many bars and pubs.
Councillor Simon Hoar, cabinet member for community safety and public protection, said: "The bright yellow pavement stencils are impossible to miss and are strong reminders not to take these risks.
"Statistics and surveys show that fewer drink-driving accidents are happening than several years ago – and that is largely due to the ongoing success of campaigns such as this one."

According to the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents around 430 people a year are killed in crashes in which someone exceeds the speed limit or drives too fast for the conditions.
That compares with around 250 people who die a year in crashes in which someone was over the legal drink drive limit.
In a report last September in the Croydon Advertiser, there was over a 90% drop in speeding tickets issued in the borough, from 5,300 in 2008 to 507 in 2010.
Amongst London boroughs in 2011, the biggest increase in the number of people killed or seriously injured was in Croydon. Here they rose from 87 in 2010 to 109 in 2011 - a rise of 25 per cent. The number of people killed on our roads doubled - from 4 to 8.
Cause and effect.
Ignoring the "elephant in the room" of speeding means that people will continue to be killed or seriously injured - unnecessarily.
