It was smiles all round when Cheam’s Olympic cyclist visited the hospital she was born in.

Joanna Rowsell, 23, from Cheam, delighted both patients and staff when she paid a visit to St Helier Hospital on the August 16.

The gold medallist toured the maternity unit and visited young patients staying at Queen Mary’s Hospital for Children.

She met with midwives in the birth-centre and maternity department and chatted with young patients and staff in the children’s ward.

She said: "I was born in St Helier Hospital, so it was a pleasure to come back here, have a tour of the hospital and meet the staff and patients.

"Life has been a bit of a whirlwind since the Olympics, but it’s good to be home and meeting people in the local community.

"Every one has been incredibly supportive of all of the GB team, and it’s a privilege to be a part of events like this."

Lin McGraw, matron for the children’s ward, said: "The children were speechless when they saw her and their faces were an absolute picture."
