Croydon's councillors highest paid in London

The borough’s elected officials are the highest paid in the capital, with more than £1.5m spent last year on Croydon’s councillors.
Figures from the Tax Payers Alliance have revealed Croydon’s councillors enjoy the highest basic allowance of any paid in London, £11,239.
Neighbouring south London authorities all offered their elected officials more than 10,000 a eyar, but none came as high as Croydon.
In Bromley, councillors are paid £10,872, £10,597 in Lambeth, £10,191 in Sutton and £10,596 in Wandsworth, a 3.3 per cent decrease on the £10,957 paid in 2010/11.
Croydon has defended the high figure pointing to the size of Croydon’s population, the highest in London, as a contributing factor.
Council leader Mike Fisher, who receives more than £50,000 for his position, said: "It is the largest borough in London. If you look at the cost of how much this costs per resident it is just £2.30."
Councillor allowances have been frozen by Croydon since 2010, and are set to be reviewed in 2014/15.

A number of officers and council staff have been also been reduced.
Though the population is high, Croydon has too many councillors and they get paid too much for the services provided.
We have cabinet members and deputies who get paid more than a full time council staff for their part time work.
David Cameron is trying to reduce the number of MPs and Croydon council is trying to increase the number of deputy cabinet members.

50000 pounds isn't what Mike Fisher gets paid, it's what he weighs

The argument that councillors' allowances are proportionate to the borough's population is a load of rubbish. It's not indicative of how much work the councillors actually do - and since the introduction of the stupid Cabinet system (where power is concentrated in the hands of the few) most backbench councillors actually do very little.
