To mark the start of the Paralympics, Elmbridge came together to celebrate the sport of boccia with a tournament and intergenerational friendly matches.
The day began with teams from centres for the community across Elmbridge competing in the Mayor’s annual boccia tournament at Thames Ditton Centre for the Community.
After exciting matches, the mayor of Elmbridge Councillor Janet Turner presented the medals to all the competitors and Claygate Centre for the Community were crowned as the winners.
The tournament was followed by fun and friendly matches between Wingham Court Care Centre, Cleves School and enthusiastic spectators who fancied trying their hand at the game.
Boccia is an inclusive sport, which can be played by all ages and abilities.
The game consists of two teams who throw red or blue balls whilst seated, with the aim of getting their balls closest to the white jack ball.
