A campaign to mark Kingston’s Olympic involvement has been gathering more momentum.

Businesses have responded positively to putting up a commemorative monument or plaque in Kingston to celebrate the Games.

Last week the Surrey Comet reported Chessington councillor Shiraz Mirza started a campaign to get business and groups behind a physical Olympic legacy to remember the cycle races and torch relay.

Kingston College has already got on board. Principal Peter Mayhew-Smith said: “We are 100 per cent behind it. I think the Olympics were fantastic and we have had a wonderful summer.

"We have still got students in their hundreds going up for the Paralympic events. “We are willing to put a lot of effort and enthusiasm into this to make it happen and would make a contribution to it.”

He suggested the Olympic spirit could continue with inspired students across the borough putting forward their artistic ideas in a competition.

Students at the college created their own giant Olympic torch following the relay that went past the building in July.

Kingston Council has said it will not give any money but will play an “advisory” role.

A council spokesman said: “We encourage businesses to get on board with the campaign and hope for the successful installation of a monument of which the whole borough can be proud.”

Other businesses that have expressed interest include Waran Solicitors, Lucy White Dry Cleaners and the Shiraz Mirza Trust.

Ahmad Nawaz Wattoo, a partner at Waran Solicitors, said: “Kingston was so heavily involved in the Games so this would be good for the community and great for the town’s image.”

In Dorking, by Box Hill, a steel sculpture of two cyclists was put up to mark the cycle races.

The £20,000 sculpture was funded by the public who donated £40 for each steel leaf used.

Councillor Shiraz Mirza said he was delighted with the response from Kingston businesses and the public so far.
