The four-year-old daughter of Saad Al-Hilli, the Claygate businessman murdered in France, has returned to the UK after her terrifying ordeal.

Her seven-year-old sister, Zainab, is still in hospital in France after being brought out of a medically-induced coma.

Zainab was shot in the shoulder and suffered injuries to her head and has been in hospital under police guard since Wednesday.

Zeena Al-Hilli, who spent eight hours hiding under her mother's body, was the only family member to come away from the shooting unharmed. The sisters’ mother and grandmother were also shot dead in the attack.

French and British investigators began examining the family home in Oaken Lane on Saturday, and continued that search today.

Speaking on Saturday, Colonel Marc de Tarle, of the Gendarmerie, said: “The French delegation is here in England under the direction of the French prosecutor, who requests international assistance from Great Britain in relation to a crime committed in France

“What I can tell you is that our co-operation is very good and the British police are making a due effort both in human and technical terms.

“I thank the British Police for its great support. Our arrival has been prepared by the services of the French Embassy. The investigation will be difficult and complex.”

Assistant Chief Constable Rob Price, of Surrey Police, added: “This is a French led investigation. I would like to assure members of the public that Surrey Police will be providing all possible support for this complex investigation.

“As you are already aware we have provided specialist search teams to carry out thorough checks at an address in Claygate, and we have also provided a Family Liaison Officer (FLO) to assist members of the family involved both in France and the UK.

“We are also working with our partners, both locally and internationally, to manage the longer term impact of this tragic incident.”

Searches of the home are expected to continue for at least another two days.

The family were on a camping holiday when Saad, his wife Iqbal and her mother were shot twice in the head. A French cyclist was also killed.
