Police investigators have discovered two legs belonging to an infant on Tooting Common.

Initial reports said a number of body parts had been found near Dr Johnson Avenue, which splits Tooting Common, this morning just before 8am.

The grim discovery was made near the car park, on Dr Johnson Avenue which has been cordoned off and forensic experts are examining the scene.

A special post mortem investigation is set to take place tomorrow where experts hope to ascertain how the limbs were severed and how long they have been there.

Rumours from various news agencies have reported that the body parts were that of a baby, rather than a child.

A spokesman for the Met Police said: "We were called to reports of body parts, possibly of a child.

"Officers from Wandsworth are investigating to check the authenticity, but it seems to be authentic."

"We cannot say at this early stage how long the discovery had been on the common."

Residents and commuters inundated the newsdesk and Twitter with comments regarding the find.

Paul Gavin, who was on a bus to work, said: "The whole Wandsworth Police are out in force. The entire common is crawling with police. Hideous."

On Twitter, Heidi Vella wrote: "Horrible. Infant body parts found on Tooting Bec common this morning."

The area is popular with dog walkers, families and fitness enthusiasts because of the nearby pond, play area and tennis courts. Do you have any more information about this? Call the newsdesk on 020 8722 6343.
