The local Bourne Society in conjunction with Southern Railway and the local rail user group, The East Surrey Transport Committee, will unveil a Bourne Soceity blue plaque at Coulsdon Town Station.

The Bourne Society is the local history group for Croydon and North East Surrey and they errect blue plaques on buildings of local interest.

On Saturday they will be unveiling their latest blue plaque on the renamed Coulsdon Town Station commemorating its name change from Smitham last year.

Smitham station on the Tattenham Corner Line was opened in 1904 by the South Eastern railway to serve the community of Smitham Bottom.

The village of Smitham Bottom changed its name to Coulsdon in 1911 and the station changed its name to Coulsdon Town 100 years later.

Charles King of the East Surrey Transport Committee said that although a lot of people felt it was sad to change the name. Coulsdon Town reflects its location much better and there has been an increase in uses of over 9% since the name change.

Through the Bourne Society Blue plaque passengers will be able to see the history of the station and its original name of Smitham.

The unveiling will take place on Saturday September 15 at 10.45am.
