Light fight for New Addington man Roger Ellis who slept in bath

A man who slept in his bath to escape the light from a new street lamp has said he will be seeking legal advice after the council said the lighting levels were acceptable.

Roger Ellis slept in his bath for four nights in July, after a new street light was installed outside his New Addington home.

The 47-year-old took the desperate action after being unable to get any sleep in his bedroom at the front of the property.

However, council inspectors came round on three occasions to test lighting levels and decided they were within an acceptable range.

Mr Ellis said: "It is a terrible society we live in where people are put after money and profit.

"I will take this to the next level and will be speaking to my lawyers."

A spokesman for Croydon Council said: "The amount of light falling onto houses on this street has been raised to meet modern British standards, but is well within the agreed acceptable range."

If it was April the 1st I would truly believe that this story was an April fool. Tell me, is it really more comfortable sleeping in a bath than in a room with a bit of light coming in? This man has clearly never heard of curtains or eye masks. Presumably this will be some kind of infringement of his human rights. It's time for you to get a life Mr Ellis!

Is this bloke for real? Where I live there is a kind of spotlight light fixed on the wall of the building opposite me for security reasons, which shines directly into my bedroom. Solution - thicker curtains, problem solved. Get a life man and stop complaining about nothing. As KW above said, this story is like an April fools joke.

I recommend black-out covers for his windows, but that would mean fixing his problems instead of running to the press.

Poor sod. I have a sleep disturbance but no street lights near my bedroom windows. To borrow a phrase from the railways, in my case "it's the wrong kind of sunlight." (Never thought I would stoop thatlow.) But I went to the local fabric store and found thick, black "craft felt" on sale and made a set of blackout curtains with my very own hands.

You see, those curtains, so common in WWII not only keep light IN, but they also can keep light OUT.

I truly hope your bath has given you back pain. Man up!
