Croydon traffic woe to continue as underpass work is required

A road closure that has caused traffic chaos is set to remain in place for another four hours.

Tailbacks as far as Waddon are being reported after a diesel spill in the town centre caused traffic chaos.

Croydon Council is warning the Croydon underpass could be closed until just before the afternoon rush hour at about 3pm as engineers rush to make the road usable following the incident at 6.30pm last night.

A spokesman from the council said work was being done to take the top layer off the road surface to make it temporarily passable before workers carry out the necessary resurfacing over night.

The problems have caused huge transport delays in the town this morning, though there are reports the traffic is now moving.

Trams are suspended between East Croydon and Reeves Corner due to the volume of traffic, and diversions have been set up to keep traffic out of the town centre.

The crash which caused the spill took place in the underpass at 6.30pm on Sunday on the southbound lane.

Roads certainly were slipperly yesterday, the back of my car stepped right out on the one way road around the iylo building yesterday afternoon.

It only took me 20 minutes to get into Croydon from Selsdon, using the back routes.
