Tributes from across Croydon have been paid to MP Malcolm Wicks.

The 65-year-old, who was MP for Croydon North, lost his battle with cancer.

The former energy minister, who has served Croydon since 1992, had lived in the borough for over 30 years.

A married grandfather of seven, Mr Wicks was diagnosed with cancer in October last year.

Residents and councillors alike have taken to Twitter to pay tribute to Mr Wicks.

Councillor Tony Newman, Leader of Croydon Labour Group said: “The death of Malcolm Wicks is a tragic loss to many.

“The people of Croydon have lost a powerful advocate and Labour has lost one of our finest.

Gavin Barwell MP for Croydon Central wrote: “V sad to hear Malcolm Wicks has passed away.

“A great MP for Croydon North and a good friend. Drive home from SW1 won’t be the same without him”

Former Labour cabinet member Lord Andrew Adonis said: “Terribly sad news of Malcolm Wicks’ death. A highly effective and conscientious MP and minister, he will be greatly missed.”

Dave M tweeted: “RIP Malcolm Wicks MP Labour Croydon North who died today. A decent thinking, careful and caring member of the British Parliament.

Tracey Crouch, Conservative MP for Chatham and Aylesford wrote: “Such sad news about Labour MP Malcolm Wicks.

“A lovely man who was always so kind to colleagues regardless of political persuasion.”

Richard Serunjogi said: “Immensely sad to learn of the death of my Great MP, Malcolm Wicks.

“Such an incredible person and encouraged me to go LSE. Thoughts with his family.”
