Westfield has submitted its plans for the £1bn redevelopment of the Whitgift Centre.

Croydon Council is expected to make a decision on its application which includes 1.5m sq ft of retails space and up to 600 new homes, early next year.

The Australian developers submission came shortly before Allders closed down last month.

Their proposed development would have a key anchor store such as John Lewis, which they say "would have a positive impact in attracting other quality comparison retailers to the centre."

As part of the redevelopment Westfield plans to increase leisure provision in Croydon town centre.

The construction work, which would be undertaken in three key stages, would create 430 full time equivalent jobs, with thousands of more jobs created once the shopping centre opened.
