Croydon youths celebrate their success at the London Youth Games

Young people in Croydon celebrated their success at the London Youth Games at a glittering awards ceremony last week.

The borough picked up the Jubilee Trophy, as well as being named overall champions, in Europe's largest annual youth sports event which took place at Crystal Palace in July.

Croydon also picked up the Disability Trophy as the overall winners in Paralympic sports.

The youths triumph was celebrated at a ceremony hosed by Steve Backley MBE at Lord's Cricket Ground on October 9, where stars of London 2012 including Olympic cycling gold medallist Joanna Rowsell, Olympic judo silver medallist Gemma Gibbons and Paralympic rowing gold medallists Naomi Riches handed out silverware.

A record 104,463 young people participated in the Games, which is the most ever in its 35 year history.

London Youth Games Chairman Anthony Kendall said: "To be the champions of London in Olympic year is already a hugely significant achievement, but to do so in the most competitive year in our history is something for Croydon to be exceptionally proud of.

"Congratulations to Croydon, I’m sure they will take some stopping in 2013 as they try to hang on to the Jubilee Trophy."
