An independent school has submitted plans for a three-storey extension, multi use games area with flood lighting and new conference space.

King’s College School in Wimbledon Common has put forward proposals which will provide six large classrooms as part of its plan to re-introduce A Levels.

The T-shaped extension, which would stand within Merton’s conservation area, will take up part of the school’s current playing field to the north east of the site and hard surface outside of the Great Hall.

It also comprises a new multi-use hall, staff offices, toilets, conference facilities and a multi-use games area which would be made available to the public outside of term-time.

The application, which forms part of the school’s wider master plan for the next 10 to 15 years, has been recommended for approval by council officers when it goes before the planning application committee on Thursday, October 10.

Officers did raise concerns over the loss of open space but resolved that "benefits of the proposal would outweigh the limited harm caused by the loss of a small part of designated open space and sports field, which does not form part of an existing sports pitch or required run-off."

King’s College’s site has progressively extended over the years and many of its buildings date back to the 19th and 20th centuries.

Founded in 1829 in the Strand the school, which accommodates boys aged seven to 18 and girls aged 16 to 18, was relocated to Wimbledon 60 years later.

Having survived through World War Two the school’s Great Hall still has damage from shrapnel that can be seen to this day.
