A talented Balham schoolboy has become the 100,000th person to achieve the Arts Award, a national arts qualification for young people under 25.
11-year-old Lucca Muchmore, of Telferscot School in Balham, developed his passion for illustration and printmaking into an impressive art project, achieving the Bronze level of the qualification.
Initially inspired by how cartoons are drawn, Lucca used his time on the scheme to explore the techniques of monoprinting and digital illustration, experimenting with iPad drawing and learning about the work of David Hockney and Patrick Caulfield.
As well as encouraging young people to explore arts, media or culture, the Arts Award programme teaches leadership skills.
In Lucca’s case, he developed the confidence to lead workshops, inspiring his classmates to try their hand at making their own prints. He also created a website for his art and learnt how to market and sell his pieces.
Lucca’s mother, Izabella Knights, said: “This is more than a certificate to Lucca. Before doing the Arts Award he didn’t have much confidence in himself as an artist, but that has changed completely. He has gone on a wonderful creative journey, and we are chuffed to bits for him.”
Lucca will be at the Balham Crafts Fair on November 15, selling his art prints and greeting card designs.
