A special school in Wallington celebrated the unveiling of a new £3,000 garden last week, funded by a John Laing Charitable Trust award.

Sherwood Park Special School, in Streeters Lane, celebrated last Wednesday, as Tom Brake MP and the mayor of Sutton, councillor Margaret Court, officially opened the school’s environmental sensory garden.

The school received the award in January, and the money helped transform the school’s grounds.

Sherwood Park was chosen to receive the highest award from the John Laing Charitable Trust, and the garden has been under development since January.

Andrea Ashton, Sherwood deputy headteacher, said: “We consider learning outside to be greatly beneficial for our pupils, as it provides a natural multi-sensory environment for children and young adults with special educational needs.

Tom Brake MP said: “Safe outdoor space in which to feel, smell and watch food grow is a great place for children. I hope this garden will make them enjoy their days at school even more.”
