Schools across Merton have begun their Christmas celebrations, with nativity plays and carol singing to mark the start of the festive season.
Some 75 children from Hollymount School in Wimbledon took part in a traditional nativity play on December 4 that was watched by an audience of over 100.
The reception classes of the Priory Church School performed Once Upon a Winter’s Night on Monday. The script, which covered musical genres from classical to rap, was written by reception teacher Gemma Kavanagh.
On Tuesday children from St Ann’s and Hillcross primary school sang in a carol service held outside the civic centre in Morden. They were joined by Merton’s mayor Councillor Nick Draper, cabinet member for finance and regeneration Councillor Diane Neil Mills, parents and shoppers.
The group gathered under the 25-foot Christmas tree in the town centre to sing classics including Away in a Manger and Silent Night.
Debbie Taylor’s five-year-old daughter Lucie was one of the singers. She said: “She’s been excited about this for weeks. All the kids have. It’s all she’s been talking about.”
And last Friday, pupils from St Thomas of Canterbury school sand carols in Wimbledon station to raise money for charity.
