The glitz and glamour of the world’s biggest showbiz bash came to a Battersea school when it staged its very own Oscars ceremony last week.

Newton Prep School, in Battersea Park Road, held the film awards on January 20 to mark the end of the Year 4 film projects which began at the start of the school year.

The black-tie event was attended by over 200 people and featured a showcase of cinematic productions the children had made and gave gongs to the outstanding actors, actresses and directors.

The event - complete with red carpet, paparazzi, and glamorous VIP guests - began with the screenings of the eight silent films, which included diverse genres such as western, horror, slapstick comedy, and melodrama.

The second half of the evening saw the presentation of a host of awards including most romantic moment, most terrifying moment and most expressive cast.Students started working on their projects in September last year and were supported through the process by the school’s drama department.

They also attended a day of hands-on training with the One-Day Film School at the Young Film Academy in central London, where the children got the chance to take part in workshops about on-screen fighting, screenwriting and camerawork.

During filming, the children got the opportunity to control every aspect of the production, working as actors, directors, production managers and camera operators, with filming taking place in a variety of locations around Battersea.

After filming was completed, they also helped the ICT department on the post-production editing of their films.

Speaking about the project, the school’s head of drama, Eimear McEvoy-Edwards, said: “This annual project is a fabulous opportunity for our pupils to learn new skills, gain confidence, and produce a final product that they can be really proud of.

“The Oscars Night is an exciting event for parents, pupils, and teachers, and gives the school a chance to celebrate all of the hard work that has gone into this project since the beginning of the year.”
