Surrey school kids will get a chance to compete in the P&G Surrey School Games athletics finals this weekend.

More than 700 young athletes will take part in track and field events at Kingsmeadow Athletics Centre, in Kingston Road, Kingston, on June 11.

The finals will end P&G's 100-day programme of events, which aims to encourage more children to get involved in sports during the build up to the 2012 Olympics.

So far, more than 2,000 youngsters across the county have taken part in events including football, badminton, hockey and mountain biking.

Denise Saliagopoulos, Surrey County Council's Cabinet Member for Community Services and the 2012 Games, said: “Playing regular sport makes children healthier and teaches them that hard work and dedication can bring success.

“I hope these sporting events help nurture the next generation of Olympic hopefuls.”

The games are supported by Olympic badminton medalist Gail Emms, who said she “can't praise the importance of school sport enough”.
