Schools across Epsom have spoken of their pride in students who achieved record breaking A level results today.

With record numbers fighting to secure a university place before a £6,000 hike in fees next year competition was fierce, but students across Epsom made the grade with thousands securing their first place or insurance university choice.

Top performer, Kara Heggs achieved 5 A*s while Derek Cheng, Jen Lewsey, Vickie Shiu and Eric Lee all achieved 4 A*s, all students at Epsom College.

Kara and Eric will both be taking up places at Cambridge to read theology and economics respectively, while Jen has qualified to study medicine at Imperial College London and Vickie will be taking up a place at Bristol to study economics and finance.

Angela Drew, deputy head, said: "We congratulate all our leavers on their excellent results.

“There was an impressive number of A*s this year and pupils took every opportunity to enhance their UCAS applications with additional qualifications.

Epsom and Ewell High School also achieved fantastic results ahead of targets with 20.4 per cent of students achieving A* and A grades while 31.9 per cent achieving A and B grades.

Guy Blair, deputy head, said: "The majority of our students were accepted with their first choice or their reserve.

"All bar two students are moving onto where they wanted to with the remaining two awaiting confirmation tomorrow."

The City of London Freemen’s School in Ashtead celebrated a 100 per cent pass rate with 91 per cent of students achieving A*, A or B grades and nine students confirming places at Oxford or Cambridge.

Philip MacDonald, headmaster at freemen’s said: “I congratulate all of our students and their teachers on a magnificent achievement this year.

“The continuing trend in higher A Level results, especially in the traditional A Level subjects at Freemen’s, is very encouraging and I wish all our students every success as they move on to university or college.”

Rosebery School in Epsom also achieved outstanding results with a 99.2 per cent pass rate with 59 per cent of students achieving A* to B grades, up 4 per cent from last year.

Headteacher, Sarah Mackintosh, said: “This is a superb achievement by staff and students who have worked tirelessly in our pursuit of excellence.

“Today is the culmination of years of hard work and dedication and it has paid off.

“I wish all of the students all the very best as they now move on to University.”
