A long-serving caretaker was given the duty of officially opening new classrooms.
John Allam, who has been the site manager at Beddington Park School for 10 years also unveiled a plaque, commemorating the event, with his name engraved on it.
Mr Allam, who lives next door to the school, said: "It was a real shock; I didn't know about it until Mr Cooke announced it to everyone at the opening ceremony.
It's completely unexpected but I'm very proud; its a real honour."
Sutton Council' executive recently approved expansion plans for another four schools in time for September 2012
