Two Sutton schools are celebrating after being awarded eco-status.

Cheam Park Farm Junior and Muschamp Primary in Carshalton have been given the Green Flag Eco-Schools award.

The schools succesfully implimented a green aspect to the curriculum through pupil-led eco-committees.

Heidi Westley, headteacher at Muschamp Primary School, said: “I’m so proud of all the hard work which the pupils have put in over the past two years to achieve the award.

“Pupils have got really involved and promoted environmental issues themselves by presenting assemblies, entering poster competitions and advising teachers on how to save power. Most importantly, the children are taking their good habits home.”

Muschamp school have reduced their landfill waste by a third and saved over 4,000 hours of energy with their ‘whiteboard switch off’ campaign at lunchtimes.

Cheam Park Farm Juniors pupils have kept their school grounds litter free, reduced electricity waste and ‘greened’ their classrooms with interesting houseplants.

Sutton now has six schools at Green Flag level and another 32 with bronze and silver awards.
