The Commissioner of the Metropolitan Police Service supported a proposal to install CCTV cameras in police cars when he visited the borough last week.

Bernard Hogan-Howe, visited Lambeth College, in Wandsworth Road to meet people from Wandsworth.

He outlined his vision before taking questions, with support by Wandsworth's Acting Borough Commander Paul McGregor and Lambeth Borough Commander Matt Bell.

It was led by Lambeth Community Police Consultative Group (CPCG) chairman Nick Mason, who asked the Commissioner about his vision of a total policing ethos and his vision for policing in London.

The event came after Mr Hogan-Howe told national newspapers he was going to drive racists out of his force, following allegations of racism in the force in the wake of last year's riots.

There are currently 10 incidents involving 18 officers being investigated by the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC).

Questions raised during the visit included stop and search, with the Commissioner stating he will provide more training to officers and improve how they are done.

He condemned racist comments alleged to have been made by one officer and agreed it would be a good idea to place cameras in police vehicles, suggested by somebody in the audience.

Mr Hogan-Howe also promised to monitor the amount of time Safer Neighbourhoods Teams spend on non-borough duties.
