A student set fire to her course work just hours before it was due to be handed in.

The Kingston University student was trying to seal some fabric when it caught fire, causing minor burns to her hands and setting off the fire alarm at her hall of residence.

The flames quickly grew at the Clayhill halls, in Surbiton, last night when the student, attempting to contain the fire, put the burning fabric in a bin full of paper tissues.

Watch manager Hart of Surbiton Fire Station said the student was more concerned with her coursework than the burns.

He said: "She was in a terrible state. The work had to be handed in 10.30am this morning and she was less worried about having the burns treated to trying to restart her coursework."
