A demonstration is taking place tonight calling on the council to halt plans to sell Elliott School playing fields.

Save Elliott School (SES) campaigners will be protesting outside Wandsworth Town Hall, ahead of the Finance and Corporate Resources Overview and Scrutiny Committee which will make the final decision.

Last month the council reduced the amount of land set to be sold to fund the conversion of the school into an academy.

But demonstrators are hoping the council will cancel their plans to sell 40 per cent of the school, in Pullman Gardens, Putney.

A deputation is expected to be given by The Twentieth Century Society on heritage considerations, but campaigners have said requests by the SES campaign, ex-teachers and Westleigh Avenue residents group to speak have been turned down.

Ed Lattimore, a former student, speaking on behalf of SES said: "Since the original proposal the council has agreed to two minor amendments following intense public pressure.

"As a result the school will provide a far better environment for learning and we should all feel pleased about that.

"Political pressure does work and we call upon all our supporters to join us tomorrow for one final push for a further amendment to the proposals which remains terribly short sighted and damaging for education and the future of this historic and much loved site."

The demonstration is taking place at 6.30pm outside Wandsworth Town Hall, Wandsworth High Street with the committee meeting taking place at 7.30pm.
