Birthday celebration raises family spirits

James celebrated his ninth birthday last week. James celebrated his ninth birthday last week.

Family and friends of James Haddad gathered last weekend to celebrate his ninth birthday, made extra special, because it is his first birthday, since he was diagnosed with a life threatening brain condition.

Since then, his parents and sister Christine, 15, have struggled to come to terms with his illness and the upheaval in their daily lives to care for him and research any possible courses of treatment.

Having endured six weeks of radiotherapy, James is now on a course of pioneering drugs and his condition is considered clinically stable.

At times during their ordeal, the West Croydon family did not expect to see James celebrate this anniversary on Thursday, June 20, so the celebrations on Sunday were especially joyous.

His father Robert said: "Seeing him celebrate his ninth birthday has given us encouragement, hope and more determination for the future."

James' party was held at the Zapp Zone, Mega Bowl, Streatham, who kindly hosted the function for free when they heard of his condition.

Robert said: "Our thanks must go to all at the Mega Bowl, particularly Angie Chandler and all those rooting for James's recovery."

James and his friends were then taken free-of-charge by Mayday Travel to the local Pizza Hut, at the Colonnades, where they enjoyed a discounted meal.

Robert said: "It is remarkable that these companies have given their time and profit to make it such a special day for James. We are so grateful and won't forget their kindness."

The entire arrangements for this function were made by Cathy Moore, a family-friend whose own children attend St Mary's Junior School, like James.

James's reaction to his day amazed his parents, who often struggle to keep him in high spirits.

Robert added: "James recalls everything that went on during the day in such a way that all the misery that normally occupies his day seems to have taken a back seat. It was a great lift for all the family to see him so happy."
