A tribute to James

Robert and Sue Haddad received a rousing standing ovation at last week's Croydon Champions Reception, and accepted almost £3,000 towards the James Haddad Appeal.

Before receiving a cheque for £2,289 from the We Think Croydon's Champions fund, Robert gave an emotional speech of thanks for the remarkable support the family and appeal received during his son's tragic ten-month fight against a rare inoperable brain tumour.

He also outlined the family's continued commitment to the fund, which stands at over £40,000. It will now be used to help other children suffering the same condition which took their nine-year-old son.

He said: "We have been deeply touched by the response to the appeal, and by people's kindness in offering donations, messages of support and prayer. It shows that community spirit and generosity is alive and well in Croydon, and we cannot thank you enough.

"If James had been alive today, I know he would have been very proud to meet all the champions here this evening."

Croydon family's bravery, not only throughout their ten month ordeal, but for having the courage to make a speech just five days after burying their only son. Robert Stiby, grandson of Jesse Ward founder of the Croydon Advertiser, presented the cheque and pledged a further £250 from the Jesse Ward Foundation.

Leon and Amber Zakatek, who have raised over £10,000 for the appeal, then sang an emotional tribute to James. A raffle held on the night raised a further £489 for the appeal as guests gave generously for the chance to win numerous prizes donated by sponsors including a full set of golf clubs, a helicopter flight over London and a meal for four.
