Detectives are investigating exactly what happened in South Norwood this afternoon, after reports of a man armed with a machete appear to be unfounded.
One witness, who did not want to be named, said he saw two armed response vehicles and two other police cars near Norwood Junction just before 2pm.
He said he has been told there was a suspect with a machete.
Police were called to Portland Road at the junction with South Norwood Hll at about 1.20pm following reports of a man behaving aggressively.
They searched the area but did not find the suspect.
There are no reported injuries.
Officers are studying CCTV footage to establish if any offences have been committed.
There have been no arrests and enquiries are ongoing.
