Young people are being encouraged to report friends who carry a knife to the police.

The new scheme aims to reassure youngsters that their anonymity will be preserved and they should not fear repercussions if they text in details.

In a bid to be more in tune with youth, posters ask young people to send a text to 88551 with the potential offender’s name, school, age and area and advises them to delete the text from their sent box afterwards.

The police then promise to scramble the number and cannot trace the number or reply to the message.
