A man stabbed to death in West Croydon last night was walking to hospital to visit his hours-old baby boy, police revealed.

The 26-year-old man’s parner had given birth to his son just hours before he was killed in a fight at a bus stop on London Road.

His three year old daughter witnessed his murder, police said today.

He was killed after being knifed outside Lidl at 6.15pm.

He was rushed to Mayday Hospital but died less than an hour later.

DCI Cliff Lyons, leading the investigation, said: “This was a shocking attack in a public place in the early evening.

“The investigation is at a very early stage and I'm keeping an open mind about the circumstances of the attack at this point.

“A number of witnesses have already come forward but I believe there are still people with information we need to speak to and I urge those people to get in touch.

“In particular, we need to talk to two teenage boys who were at the bus stop when the incident happened who may have significant information. "They are described as black, aged between 15 and 20 years old, of slim build and wearing hooded tops.”

Police believe they know the identity of the victim but are awaiting formal identification and to inform next of kin.

A post mortem examination is scheduled to take place later today at Croydon Mortuary.

The stabbing took place just yards away from where teenager Nilanthan Murddi was stabbed last August in Sumner Road.

A 22-year-old has been arrested in connection with the incident and police have said they are keeping an open mind in regards to a motive.
