Two more men have been arrested in connection with the murder of Croydon boxer John Nii Kacsu Abbey.

A Met police spokesman confirmed two men, one aged 36, had been arrested in the early hours of the morning and were being held in connection to the murder along with a 22-year-old man on suspicion of murder.

Former Commonwealth boxer Mr Abbey was fatally stabbed near the Lidl supermarket in London Road, West Croydon on January 29 at 6.15pm as he was making his way to Mayday hospital with his daughter to visit his wife and son who was born that morning.

Mr Abbey won several medals whilst fighting as a featherweight boxer for Ghana under the name King Abbey.

He represented his country at the Manchester 2002 Commonwealth Games.

At the age of 19 he won a gold medal in the boxing championships of the Supreme Council of Sports in Africa in Lomé, Togo.

He was also a prominent member of the Black Bombers, Ghana's national amateur boxing team.

A post mortem examination held on Friday, January 30 at Croydon Mortuary gave cause of death as a single stab wound to the heart.

Police have been given extra time to continue questioning the 22-year-old man who is understood to have handed himself in to a police station on the night of the killing.

Police said the man may be known to Mr Abbey and it was reported he was involved in a long running feud with the boxer.

An incident room has opened under Detective Chief Inspector Cliff Lyons of the Homicide and Serious Crime Command.

DCI Lyons said: "This was a shocking attack in a public place in the early evening.

“The victim's three year-old daughter was with him when he was attacked, though fortunately she wasn't physically injured.

"His partner had given birth to a son just that morning.

"The investigation is at a very early stage and I'm keeping an open mind about the circumstances of the attack at this point.

"A number of witnesses have already come forward but I believe there are still people with information we need to speak to and I urge those people to get in touch.

"In particular, we need to talk to two teenage boys who were at the bus stop when the incident happened who may have significant information.

“They are described as black, aged between 15 and 20 years old, of slim build and wearing hooded tops."

Anyone with information should call the incident room on 020 8721 4961 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
