Craig Charles gets ready to bring his funk and soul club to Croydon
Get ready for a night of funk and soul hosted by DJ Craig Charles, writes Andy Bloss.
Charles, who has starred in Red Dwarf, Robot Wars and Coronation Street, is the host of BBC 6 Music’s prime time Saturday night Funk and Soul show.
For one night only Charles is bringing his infectious brew of tunes and mayhem to Fairfield Halls.
The DJ is taking his hand picked tunes on the road this year and is touring the country to make sure as many towns as possible have a great funk party.
Charles is live on BBC 6 Music every Saturday night for three hours and the show has become a benchmark for artists who want to connect directly with their fans.
The list of guests that have been on his show speaks for itself. James Brown, Paul Weller, Amy Winehouse, The Roots and the Jungle Brothers and Primal Scream have all featured on the show.
The show in Croydon is going to be jam packed with guests. There will be performances from new South London based collective The Riotous Assembly and guest DJs Big G and Jonny Beaulaxe will be kicking off the night in style.
Charles says he is looking forward to the show and playing a whole variety of music.
He says: "Since the show's inception I have been interested in all varieties of soul and funk music, without imposing any barriers and I am just as enthusiastic about fresh new talent as I am about the classic artists from the golden age of the 60s and 70s.
"When we do a gig I generally know my first three records and then I'll see how it goes from there. We bring the 'Trunk Of Funk', we bring tens of thousands of records and CDs with us. We bring it all with us so we can go anywhere we want.
"I have done quite a few festivals this year and that is good fun as you feed off the crowd. We have done Glastonbury and the Eton Festival which was great. There is a real 70s revival at the moment and the new Daft Punk song with Nile Rodgers is proof of that.
"It is nice to see this disco dancehall groove thing opening up again. It opens up a whole new world for young people who like their music."
Charles’ show has been organised by Stand! who are bringing a whole host of different genres to the Fairfield Halls’ Arnhem Gallery.
A series of gigs featuring soul, funk, reggae, ska and R&B have so far proved hugely popular at the South London venue.
Stand! The Craig Charles Funk and Soul Club, Fairfield Halls, Park Lane, September 7, 8pm, £8 to £10, call 0208 688 9291 or visit Fairfield.co.uk.
