A variety of entertainment will be on offer in Croydon throughout October as the borough celebrates Black History Month.

Festivals, stories, crafts, dance and costumes that profile the traditions of African and Caribbean communities will feature at a range of events.

Libraries will also host events portraying black heritage and culture through poetry, story readings, live performances and music workshops, with visits from children's TV presenter Floella Benjamin, musician Alexander D Great and writer Sandra Agard.

There will also be live performances at Fairfield Halls, including the variety show In Celebration of Our Culture and a night of laughter with comedian and TV personality Reginald D Hunter.

Event organiser Tony Fairweather says he is looking forward to celebrating the cultural diversity of the borough.

He says: "It is going to be a variety show which combines African, Carribean and UK cultures. It is a celebration of culture.

"It is for all the family. A lot of our acts are from Croydon or neighbouring boroughs so it is very much a south London thing.

"There is a reception area as well which anyone can go to where there will be a variety of workshops and things. There really is something for everyone here though from music to literature."

Councillor Vidhi Mohan, cabinet member for communities and economic development, adds: "Croydon has one of the country’s most diverse populations and has a vibrant African and Caribbean culture.

"It is something we celebrate all year round and it is great to see such a variety of entertainment taking place during Black History Month."
