Almost a fifth of Croydon children learned today they had missed out on a place at their first-choice primary school.

Two per cent of children due to start school in September have not been allocated a place at any of their six preferred schools.

Parents across the country today received letters and emails informing them of their children's allocation on the first ever National Offer Day.

In Croydon, 81.79 per cent of children were allocated a place at their preferred school, a rise from 77.95 per cent last year.

Parents whose children - most aged four - are due to start reception next year chose six schools in order of preference.

But 2.11 per cent of children were not allocated a place at any of their preferred schools.

They will be given a place at the closest school with space available.
