Firefighters tackled flames at flats and a shop in North End, Croydon town centre, this morning.

Six engines battled the blaze, at an empty retail unit next door to Palace Amusements and the flat above, after it was reported at 9.15am.

Fire crews from Croydon, Woodside, Norbury and West Norwood stations extinguished the blaze by 10.40am.

No one was hurt. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Croydon station manager Lee Sparks said: "The fire damaged one of the unoccupied flats on the first floor and part of an empty shop below it.

"Crews worked hard to quickly bring this blaze under control and thankfully there were no injuries.”
