A man has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder after a woman, 64, was stabbed repeatedly at a carer support centre last night.

Emergency services were called to the building, in George Street, at about 6.30pm yesterday and found the woman suffering from stab wounds.

The victim’s injuries are not life-threatening.

Police arrested the man soon after.

The victim and suspect are known to each other and police are not seeking anyone else in connection with the incident, described as a "domestic incident" by the Whitgift Foundation, which runs the centre.

The centre was shut today.

A spokeswoman for the foundation said: "The offices in the upper floors of the Carers' Support Centre are let to a number of local voluntary carer organisations.

"Last night, a domestic incident took place in one of the offices.

"Police are currently investigating the situation and we are helping them with their enquiries whilst supporting staff and colleagues. We anticipate that the centre will be open tomorrow."
