When was the last time you exclaimed ‘wheee’ as you slid down a slide in a park?

If the memory of doing so brings back fond memories of your childhood then you will be impressed by the fundraising efforts of Gemma Coldicott.

To raise money for her inclusive dance company SlideDance she walked, bussed and trammed, her way across 33 square miles of Croydon in 24 hours to shoot down the 42 slides in the borough’s public parks and playgrounds.

Taking on the challenge last Friday and Saturday, she has so far raised £750, to be spent on hiring halls so SlideDance can put on dance taster sessions for the community - particularly aimed at toddlers, and children aged five to 12 with or without disabilities, as well as adults with learning disabilities.

She said: "I have got five blisters and I’m a bit sore but it was amazing.

"Within a few hours on the first day I had a blister the size of a 50 pence piece on my right ankle and I realised I had not scheduled any lunch breaks and had to keep going and that was a low point.

"But so many people got behind me and that kept me going.

"People said ‘You’re an inspiration’ and everybody loved that it was a fundraiser.

"It was epic.

The arts student was inspired by Carsten Holler’s installation in 2006 where he put slides in the Tate Modern and encouraged people to slide down them.

And she hopes people will be inspired to come to SlideDance’s events in Wandle Park or North Down parks from 2pm on Sunday, including free running and drumming demonstrations.

These will be followed by performances in Lloyd Park on the same day.
