Boris Johnson is being accused of showing ‘contempt’ for the people of Crystal Palace for seemingly breaking his promise about extending the trams to the town.

Speaking at a Conservative Party fundraiser back in March the Mayor of London said he could "absolutely guarantee" that Tramlink would be extended to Crystal Palace by 2020.

Mr Johnson said: "It is a very slow-moving process but it is going to happen.

"It may not be by 2015 but it is going to be by the end of the decade. I can absolutely guarantee that."

But a Transport for London (TfL) consultation document on extending the Bakerloo Line from Elephant and Castle to Lewisham, Bromley and Hayes, says tram extension plans "are not actively being progressed".

Croydon North MP Steve Reed said: "Boris Johnson has shown contempt for the people of Crystal Palace.

"He promised to support the tram extension during his election campaigns in 2008 and 2012 and repeated that support as recently as March this year.

"But now we discover he had no intention of doing what he said.

"People will be bitterly disappointed that the Mayor has broken his promises in this cavalier way.

"Crystal Palace and London deserve better than this."

But Michèle Dix, TfL’s managing director for planning, said: "Tramlink extensions are under active consideration with detailed feasibility and funding work ongoing with the boroughs concerned.

"The aim is develop deliverable, fundable and value for money schemes.

"This continues to be a priority for the Mayor."
